Maintaining oral hygiene while travelling
Despite the changes in daily routine that travelling brings, it is essential to remain consistent with your oral hygiene routine while travelling to ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy.
Here are some tips for maintaining oral hygiene while on the go, as well as what to do if you experience dental issues away from home:
Before You Travel:
Visit Your Dentist: Schedule a dental check-up before your trip to address any existing issues and ensure your teeth are in good condition for travel.
Travel insurance: Ensure you have appropriate travel insurance so as in the case of a dental emergency, your medical expenses will be covered.
When Travelling:
Maintain a Routine: Stick to your regular oral hygiene routine of brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily.
Choose Water: Opt for water over sugary or acidic drinks to help rinse away food particles and maintain pH balance in your mouth.
Limit Snacking: Try to minimize between-meal snacking, as frequent snacking can lead to increased sugar/acid exposure to the teeth, increasing the risk of dental decay.
Use a Travel Toothbrush Case: To keep your toothbrush clean and prevent it from coming into contact with other items in your luggage.
Watch Your Diet: Be mindful of what you eat. Avoid excessive sugary or acidic foods and drinks that can contribute to tooth decay and enamel erosion.
Rinse After Eating: If you can't brush your teeth after a meal, rinse your mouth with water to help remove food particles.
If You Experience Dental Issues:
Pain or Discomfort: If you develop tooth pain or discomfort, rinse your mouth with warm water and floss gently to check for any trapped food particles. If the pain persists, seek dental care.
