Alternatives to flossing

Interproximal cleaning, or cleaning between the teeth, is an essential step in our daily oral hygiene routine as discussed in our blog post ‘Why flossing is important’.

However, some patients, for example paediatric, disabled, and elderly patients, may struggle with conventional flossing due to reduced dexterity. Additionally, patients with periodontal disease, braces or complex dental work (crowns, implants, and bridges) may not find flossing effective in cleaning in-between their teeth.

These patients may benefit from alternative products including:

  • Interdental brushes: Interdental brushes are small brushes specifically designed to fit between the teeth. They are available in a range of sizes to suit different sized interdental spaces. They are extremely effective in removing plaque and food debris.
  • Water flosser: A water flosser is a device that aims a stream of water between the teeth, essentially washing away plaque and biofilm build up. This can be especially helpful to clean around dental appliances that are difficult to assess, and for patients with periodontal ‘gum’ disease.
  • Air flosser: Relatively new to the market, air flossers work similarly to the water flosser, however, use high pressure bursts or air to dislodge plaque and food debris rather than water.
  •  Floss picks: Floss picks are a small disposable appliance in which 2cms of floss is attached to a horseshoe shaped plastic head and a handle. The handle makes the act of flossing easier for those with reduced dexterity. These are often single use items, like flossing tape.
  •  Super Floss: Super floss is a thick “fluffy” type of floss that is best to clean between teeth with slightly larger interdental spaces. One end of super floss is like fishing line, making it easy to thread through very tight or difficult to access areas in the mouth. It is useful for patients undergoing orthodontic (braces) treatment.

If you are unsure what option is best for you, make an appointment with you Oral health Therapist or Dentist to receive your tailed oral hygiene plan.
